IONM
Medically induced and random neurological injuries to patients can occur during
any surgery, and especially during surgeries that involve the nervous system. Intraoperative
neuromonitoring (IONM) is a technique used to reduce neural injury during a variety
of surgeries including spinal and brain-related procedures. It involves the use
of a variety of electro-physiological and vascular monitoring procedures during
surgery to allow early warning and avoidance of injury to nervous system structures.
Neural tissue is stimulated with a brief electrical pulse that evokes signals that
can be recorded from other neural structures that are functionally connected to
the tissue (i.e. other nerves, muscle, spinal cord and brain).
IONM can deliver benefits at many levels of medical care, including:
- Reduced patient neurological deficits
- Markedly reduced surgical morbidity and mortality
- Reduced hospital stay and medical costs
- Reduced overall insurance burden
Impulse's brand of IONM is a complete outsourced program. IMI certified neurophysiologists
work in partnership with overseeing physicians who use state-of-the-art-monitoring
equipment to provide surgeons with real-time analysis and input. Our neurophysiologists
located in the operating room communicate with supervising physicians through broadband
real-time transmission of signals and instant messaging to interpret neurophysiological
data gathered during surgery. Remote technical and senior neurophysiologist expertise
is also available as needed, along with access to a broad range of on-line knowledge
resources.
Additionally, IMI has created a comprehensive intraoperative monitoring operations
infrastructure to support the delivery of our services. Built on a powerful IT platform,
we provide surgeons, hospitals, and medical centers with a complete IONM solution
staffed by certified neurophysiologists and physicians who monitor the nervous system
during surgery.
