Peripheral

IONM has been shown to be useful with a variety of 'peripheral' surgeries that place neural tissues at risk. Orthopedics surgeries, like those involving correction of fractures of the pelvis, acetabulum (a concave surface of the pelvis, where the head of the femur meets with the pelvis to form the hip joint) and hip surgeries may be associated with a high complication rate. Injuries to the sciatic nerve, a major nerve of the leg, may occur and may be prevented by constant flexing of the knee during the case and by the use of IONM.
