Why Use IONM

IONM adds an additional method of protecting
your patients from inadvertent operative harm. There is a significant body of literature now
suggesting that IONM reduces complications
in several operative situations.
It has now become standard of care for corrective scoliosis
operations.
Beyond simply warning of impending complications, having
monitoring in place can also provide a surgeon with a level of
comfort in extending a procedure to a greater degree than he or
she would have done without monitoring in place.
Some patients can
receive procedures with monitoring that would have been
considered too risky without monitoring.
Also, patient's families can
receive some reassurance that complications are being screened
for carefully during the procedure.
IONM techniques and
equipment have improved significantly in the last 20 years,
making neurophysiological monitoring more accessible to surgeons
and patients.
